Used Car Review Audi S3 Supreme performance in the compact class

The Basic Concept

The Audi S Philosophy

Image hosting by Photobucket

The distinctive "S" abbreviation stands for a very special definition of sports performance and style: power in abundance but also visual restraint. This is performance that offers the driver maximum control, dynamic performance and, above all, driving pleasure. Performance in which effortless poise and control count for more than mere maximum power.

The S3 is another milestone in the history of Audis S-type models. It represents a continuation of the companys strategy of having a top-of-the-range model offering superior performance in every class, including now the compact class. Another example of a unique but typically Audi combination of advanced technical solutions for a memorable driving experience and a high level of safety. The Audi A3 impresses with its combination of an extremely high-torque turbocharged engine and the superior drive concept, quattro.

A glimpse at the history of the S models, which goes back as far as the 1981 rallying season, will be enough to show the potential of this combination. That was when Audi first caused a stir with its concentrated turbo power and permanent four-wheel drive. In 1985 the "S" name first began to attract attention, when the Audi Sport quattro S1 driven by Michиle Mouton stormed to victory in the Pikes Peak Race in Colorado U.S.A. 1986 saw Bobby Unser take first place on the victory rostrum and in 1987 Walter Röhrl set a new track record. The equal superiority of powerful turbocharged engines combined with the quattro permanent four-wheel drive system on fast asphalt roads was demonstrated in the TransAm Championship of 1988. At the first attempt, the Audi 200 quattro TransAm won eight races, the drivers title, the constructors title and the admiration of its competitors.

Not long after the launch of the first S-Series model in 1990, the abbreviation "S" was already a synonym for sporting road cars with impressive performance figures and a distinctive appearance. But technology was never an end in itself; what counted were the advantages it conferred, especially for the keen driver. For example, the quattro permanent four-wheel drive system. In combination with the continuously available turbo power, it offers maximum acceleration and hence active safety. Top-class straight-line stability, agile handling, a high level of directional stability on corners and large safety margins at the limits under all road conditions are among its most impressive characteristics.

Audi S3 drivers are people with an enthusiasm for technology.

The LooksDesign

A characteristic of all Audis S models is their distinctive and sporty yet restrained styling. The differences cater for the wishes of the relevant target groups. Taking the Audi A3s prize-winning design as their starting point, the designers of the S3 have used bold lines to create something completely original and very sporting in character.

The first thing that will strike the admirer is the cars muscular appearance. The strongly profiled wheel arches increase the Audi A3s width to 1,763 mm. The cars powerful aura at the front is further emphasised by the large air intakes in the specially shaped body-coloured bumpers.

It is only at the second glance that you notice the discreet S emblem on the radiator grille. The same distinguishing mark is used at the rear of all S models. The grey-look radiator grille is differentiated by additional vertical bars. Its typical shape and the four chrome-coloured rings are an important part of the brand image, making the S3 immediately recognisable as an Audi.
A particularly striking detail of the Audi A3 are the xenon headlights - fitted as standard - with their clear glass covers. They are complemented by the compulsory headlight washing system and automatic headlight range control, and by fog lights integrated into the front skirt. The bluish light from the xenon headlights corresponds in its colour spectrum to that of daylight and thus ensures safe driving without fatigue even on long journeys at night.

The side view of the Audi A3, which is available only as a two-door version, has impressively clean lines and compact proportions. In addition to the narrow panel gaps and new door handles, the body-coloured sill panels with their clearly defined anthracite grey skirts also serve to strengthen this impression.

A closer look at the car from the side will reveal why designers prefer large wheels in their sketches. Because they fill out the wheel arches, the 17-inch Avus wheels give the car a highly unified appearance in side view and suggest the Audi A3s performance potential even when its stationary. The 225/45 R 17 W tyres give the car an appearance worthy of the designation "S" in every way and in combination with the quattro drive system ensure outstanding traction and agile handling.

The distinctive character of the Audi S3 is also evident at the rear. The roof spoiler, which blends smoothly into the cars outlines, sets a sporty tone and optimises air flow at higher speeds.

The carefully configured aerodynamics of the Audi S3 with its excellent cD value of 0.335 improve the cars performance, lower fuel consumption and reduce interior noise at high speed.
With its sports suspension, the slight lowering of the body in comparison with the A3, and its large wheels, the Audi S3 with an overall height of 1,415 millimetres has a low-slung look on the road.

All this is rounded off by the striking tail pipes, which are made from high-grade stainless steel and are another clear visual indication of the S3s performance potential.
As a new colour for the S3 at no extra charge there is Absolute red, a colour that really lives up to its name. In addition to the familiar choice of colours for the Audi A3 there is also Imola yellow, a colour familiar from the S4, available at extra charge.

The FeelingInterior

When the doors are opened, the first thing that meets the eye are the aluminium sills with their S3 logo, forming the threshold to the exclusive interior.

There is a choice of three different materials: Jacquard Satin, fitted as standard, the optional combination of Alcantara and silk nappa leather or, for the same price, silk nappa leather alone. Common to all three options is their elegant appearance and pleasant feel. Perfect workmanship goes without saying.

There is a further choice of five colours for the interior - onyx and silver in combination with Jacquard Satin or silk nappa leather or the combinations blue/onyx, silver/onyx and yellow/onyx with the Alcantara/silk nappa leather option. Silver is a bright alternative to the familiar onyx and has a mineral effect. Blue has a more forceful character, corresponding to the blue used on the Audi RS2, and yellow is the perfect match for the exterior colour Imola yellow. In addition, each colour option can be combined with a lighter or darker shade of grey for the headliner.

Body-hugging Recaro sports seats are fitted as standard and provide the driver and front-seat passenger with optimum lateral support, to ensure they arrive fresh at their destination, even after a long journey. Both front seats are electrically adjustable for height, backrest angle and lumbar support. The thigh support can be extended manually.

In combination with the height- and rake-adjustable steering wheel, an optimum seat position can be obtained by people of almost any size.

Once the seat has been adjusted to the right position, the eye falls naturally on the high-gloss appliquй trim. This has a new and unique visual fascination. But it calls for accurate and skilled workmanship: only perfectly flat surfaces which are perfectly painted achieve such an appearance. Even the slightest irregularity would spoil the overall effect.

Together with the ergonomic, 3-spoke leather-covered sports steering wheel and the high-gloss appliquй trim, the grey dials of the instrument panel give the interior a special ambience. The non-proportional speedometer dial allows the driver to read off his speed with particularly high accuracy in the 0 to 100 km/h range, a sensible aid to responsible driving given the performance potential of the Audi S3 with its impressive acceleration figures.

The driver information system FIS in conjunction with Auto-Check Control of the most important functions, and the exterior temperature display are part of standard equipment. The integral on-board computer shows the cars average speed, journey time, instantaneous and average fuel consumption and theoretical range on a display in the centre of the drivers field of view. An anti-theft alarm which monitors the interior and the latest generation of electronic immobiliser help to make sure that the Audi S3s charms dont encourage too much unwelcome attention. A pocket-friendly folding key with an inner-track locking system and the standard remote central locking system raise the standard of luxury, as do the two illuminated make-up mirrors in the sun visors.

High-quality optional extras include automatic air conditioning which takes account of the position of the sun, an electric slide/tilt sunroof with glass panel, which for convenient closing is integrated into the central locking system, and the three radio systems chorus, concert and concert BOSE with the facility for controlling the 6-CD changer in the boot. The list also includes mobile or hands-free car phone systems, cruise control and a navigation system that issues acoustic and optical instructions from the central display in the cockpit.

The Heart

Turbocharged 1.8-litre engine with five valves per cylinder developing 210 bhp

Audi engineers have been using advanced turbocharging systems on diesel and petrol engines for many years to achieve an overall package that regularly impresses the experts. A striking example of this is the 2.2-litre engine with five valves per cylinder, which ensured superior performance for the Audi 200, developing 162 kW (220 bhp), and later for the S6 and S2 Coupй, where its power output was 169 kW (230 bhp). In the Avant RS2 in particular, with an output of 232 kW (315 bhp), it revolutionised the reputation of turbocharged engines.
But there are also many more recent examples, such as the 81 kW (110 bhp) 1.9 litre TDI, the 110 kW (150 bhp) V6 TDI or the new, 2.7 litre V6 twin turbo in the Audi S4. This shows the enormous potential of turbocharged engines, a potential that is also used to good effect on the Audi S3 to provide the driver with exceptional performance.

The maximum torque of 270 Nm, which is available from just 2,100 rpm, provides the Audi S3 with sustained forward thrust. It is maintained right up to 5,000 rpm and allows powerful acceleration and top-class flexibility in all situations. The Audi S3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds and, in fifth gear, needs just 11.5 seconds to accelerate from 60 to 120 km/h. The car always has plenty of power in reserve, making driving a relaxed and pleasurable experience however long the journey.

Power is delivered smoothly even at low engine speeds. The free-revving four-cylinder turbocharged unit reaches its maximum output of 154 kW (210 bhp) at just 5,800 rpm and continues unabated up to 6,800 rpm, when it is gently limited by the engine management system.

Given the performance available, fuel consumption is modest, at just 9.1 litres/100 km (overall figure according to 93/116/EU), and the positive overall impression in this respect is rounded off by the cars compliance with the exhaust emission limits of EU III D.

Right from the start, the driver will be accompanied by the sonorous music of the engine. Though unobtrusive, it emphatically underlines the capabilities of the turbocharged engine: a full-bodied sound that perfectly matches the performance and design of the Audi S3.

The five valves per cylinder of the 1.8 litre turbocharged engine make an important contribution to the cars high performance. The number and arrangement of the valves and the geometry of the combustion chamber are a measure of the engines charge-cycle efficiency. The main factor here is the flow cross-section through the valves. The larger this figure, the more freely the engine can breathe. The advantages for the customer are an increase in torque and power and hence in driving pleasure, and the increase in efficiency also reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. With five valves it is possible to achieve the maximum flow cross-section, which is calculated from the valve lift and the sum of the valve areas.

As on the powerful Audi TT with its power output of 165 kW, a Type K04 turbocharger produces a high boost pressure even at low engine speeds, giving spontaneous and agile performance. Since air density is greatest when it is cold, and more oxygen in the combustion chamber improves efficiency, there are two intercoolers to cool the combustion air. Before it enters the engine, the air compressed and thus heated by the turbocharger is efficiently cooled down, with the result that even at top speed it is only about 20 degrees warmer than the surrounding air. This is an important requirement if maximum power is to be achieved with the lowest possible fuel consumption.

The intake ports are shaped so that the air entering the combustion chamber produces a tumbling effect. By increasing the speed of combustion, this tumble enhances the quality of the entire combustion process and its efficiency. The customer benefits from an increase in the performance and efficiency of the engine combined with low exhaust emissions and fuel consumption.

The throttle is controlled electronically by a state-of-the-art digital engine management system. The drivers torque requirement at any time is determined from the position of the accelerator and its rate of change.

Using information taken from other microprocessors on the vehicle, the control unit calculates the fastest and most economical way of meeting the drivers requirements and adjusts the boost pressure, ignition timing, quantity of fuel and the throttle angle accordingly: an important contribution to the agility and spontaneity that marks out the Audi S3 at all times.
Thanks to the management systems ability to "learn", the engine operating characteristics can be adjusted to match the grade of fuel in the tank in order to obtain the most favourable compromise between boost pressure, throttle angle, amount of fuel injected, ignition point and torque requirement.

The 6-speed gearbox fitted as standard to the Audi S3 allows the driver to make optimum use of its turbocharged engines power. Gear lever travel is short and precise: a positive invitation to make fast gear changes. The gearbox uses the three-shaft design familiar from the Audi TT quattro. The third shaft is used for 5th and 6th gear and reverse and has a higher final drive ratio. The gearbox is compact, has an ultra-light magnesium casing and can transmit high torques at low engine speeds. The gears are selected by cable to prevent troublesome vibration from being transmitted to the gear lever or the cars interior.

The extremely direct, short-travel clutch provides the sports car feel so typical of Audi S series. The diameter of the clutch plate is a generous 240 mm to allow for the high power of the engine.

The End ResultDynamic Performance and Safety

Thanks to quattro, sports suspension and very accurate, direct and responsive steering, the Audi S3 offers exceptional agility and excellent feedback from the road. Drivers will be particularly impressed by its vital handling characteristics, superb road holding and convincing tracking on fast corners, even at high speeds.

Quick Facts about the 2006 Panoz Esperante Coupe

Panoz Auto Development has unveiled the latest refinements to its world renowned Esperante for the 2005 model year. The changes to the classic Esperante, GT and GTLM models are designed to enhance an owners experience with new levels of performance, style and comfort. Panoz Auto Development, Americas premier independent manufacturer of hand built, high performance automobiles, crafts Esperante sports and racecars near Atlanta, Georgia. The Panoz Auto Development Team is continually making new breakthroughs to incorporate into our high performance vehicles, said Panoz Auto Development President and founder Dan Panoz.

For 2005, those innovations have further refined and enhanced the experience of driving and owning an Esperante. Lessons learned in our R&D department, customer clinics and on the track with the Panoz GTLM racecar, have made this the best Panoz car ever available to the public. The Esperante is available in both convertible and coupe form. All 2005 models include new standard equipment inside and outside of the cars. Several new options have also been added to the lineup.

More Low End Power

The 4.6-liter DOHC V8 in the standard and GT versions of the Esperante was tuned to produce more torque at lower RPMs. The all-aluminum motor now boasts 305 horsepower at 5,500 RPMs and 320 lb. of torque at only 4,250 RPMs and is matched to a five-speed manual or four speed automatic transmission. The GTLM retains its 420 horsepower, DOHC supercharged V-8. This world-class motor uses an Eaton supercharger and the 4.6L motor is bolted to a 6 speed manual transmission. We also changed the final rear gear ratio to maximize this new low-end power, added John M. Leverett, Director of Engineering, Research and Development. The result is a light weight sports car that is faster from 0 to 60 mph, more tractable and even more fun to drive.

A New Look Inside

Panoz Auto Development has added several new interior options to its list of extensive equipment. Customers can now choose from wood, carbon fiber or billet interior accent packages, as well as two new colors of leather. A new power seat from Recaros Style Top Line offers enhanced lumbar and side support for spirited driving along with seat heaters. This seat is standard equipment in the GT and GTLM and an available option in the classic Esperante. Custom two-toned leather trim and stitching is available on all models. Two new sound systems from Blaupunkt are now available.

Improved Handling

A new rear sub-frame, developed with technical partner Multimatic Inc., was introduced in 2004 with the GTLM. Now standard on all Esperante models, it reduces mass while increasing stiffness and features racing inspired suspension geometry. Rear control arms are fabricated, lightweight, tubular steel components bolted to aluminum uprights. This reduces un-sprung mass and works in concert with the double isolated coil-over spring/shock assembly to increase performance and improve NVH characteristics. Several new wheel and tire combinations have been introduced to the sports GT cars. The GTLM can now be optioned with polished or painted alloy 18 wheels. The GT and standard Esperante can be ordered with two new styles of 17 or 18 alloy wheels and upgraded tires.

Sharp New Attire

While the exterior styling of the three cars remains unchanged from the late 2004 revisions, Panoz has introduced three new colors including Monterey Blue, Azure Blue Metallic and Titanium Metallic. For the first time, the company is also offering dark brown and blue convertible tops as options. The new refinements to the Esperante will be on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2005.

2006 Panoz Esperante Summary

The 2006 Panoz Esperante is a 2-door, 2-passenger luxury sports car, or convertible sports car, available in 6 trims, ranging from the Convertible to the GTLM Coupe.

Upon introduction, the Convertible is equipped with a standard 4.6-liter, V8, 305-horsepower engine that achieves 17-mpg in the city and 25-mpg on the highway. 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Ralliart

Theres just one thing wrong with the 400-hp, all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Eclipse Ralliart turbo: you cant buy it. Its a one-of-a-kind SEMA concept that showcases Ralliart, Mitsubishis new line of performance parts. But maybe one day youll be able to buy it. Anyway, thats what we told ourselves when we showed up at Willow Springs International Raceway to become the first to drive the car in anger.

The Ralliart enhances the Eclipses voluptuous teardrop shape by dropping it closer to the ground and adding wider fender extensions. Like the forthcoming Mitsubishi Evo X, this Eclipse uses carbon fiber for the roof panel, the hood, the air-gulping front grille, and the aero pieces. The twenty-inch Dymag wheels even have carbon-fiber rims fastened to billet-aluminum centers.

Mitsubishi commissioned John Mueller of Muellerized Road Race Engineering to slide the drivetrain of the Lancer Evo VIII under the skin of the Eclipse. Muellers makeover of the Evos 2.0-liter four features a big HKS turbocharger, but hes calibrated the powertrain for drivable torque instead of peak power, so the turbo fours quick bang of power is a huge step forward from the lazy personality of the Mitsubishi V-6. Theres not much suspension travel, but Muellers coil-over dampers keep the car from bounding off its bump stops, and theres no trace of awkward, all-wheel-drive-style front-end dynamics when you jump on the power. For all this, the Evo powertrain doesnt make this Eclipse any lighter, so it probably still weighs about 3500 pounds.

Its hard to know what the future holds for the Eclipse Ralliart. Mitsubishi left behind its constituency of street punks when the third-generation Eclipse was introduced in 2000 with its unexciting V-6, and the Eclipse Ralliart is meant to coax those guys back under the tent by reviving the turbocharged, all-wheel-drive formula. Theres not as much money in the youth market as many manufacturers anticipated, but we think Mitsubishi needs to proceed with the Eclipse Ralliart anyway. Simply put, street cred delivers long-term sales in a way that even dramatic styling cannot.

2008 Dodge Avenger Preview

Intent on expanding Dodges scope in Europe and other global markets, DaimlerChrysler chose le Mondial de lAutomobile next week in Paris to debut the Dodge Avenger concept.

The car is said to be a close preview of the 2008 Avenger mid-size sedan, set for production next year.

It will replace the Dodge Stratus, not sold in Canada.

But the Avenger is expected to be available up here.

Based on the same platform as the Chrysler Sebring, which arrives this fall, Avenger incorporates strong Dodge styling elements similar to those used on the Charger sedan.

What it Looks Like

Dodge is betting that legions of sedan buyers out there want more style than your typical brown-bag Camry, Accord, or Sonata, and that many will like the Avenger. It may be a strong bet. With a one-two punch of the more sophisticated Sebring and aggressive Avenger, Chrysler group dealers have two good-looking sedans with which to lift sales. That said, the Avenger will polarize its share of consumers, what with styling cues that strongly resemble the Charger: long hood, short deck, huge fender flares that threaten to dwarf its wheels, and a Dodge crosshair grille that talks a louder game than its engines can deliver. Notable styling cues are its side arches, angular front end and all-around macho look.

Whats Under the Hood

This is where the Avenger runs and hides. Expect the Avenger to come equipped with a base 2.4-liter four-cylinder. That same engine generates 150 horsepower in the new Sebring and gets an EPA rated 22/30 mpg. Those who want more power will have a choice between a 2.7-liter V6 engine (200 horsepower in the Sebring) or a 3.5-liter V6 (235 horsepower in the Sebring), the latter of which is surely destined for the Avenger R/T. Transmission choices will include Chrysler’s new six-speed automatic.

Why it Matters

Built off the same platform as the 2007 Chrysler Sebring and utilizing the same global Mitsu-Hyundai-Chrysler family of engines, the Avenger boots the insignificant Stratus from the Dodge lineup and gives Dodge dealers a complete set of newly designed cars to sell, starting with the popular Caliber hatch. Its Charger looks, combined with more polite road manners, may make it a hit with buyers who want that chaw-chomping, stubble-chin style but aren’t willing to sacrifice a nice and sedate daily commute.

2008 Dodge Avenger Midsize Sedan

What We Know:

Based on the redesigned 07 Chrysler Sebring , the Avenger has the same mechanicals but brings more attitude to the table. In place of the Sebrings tentative, almost ungainly stance, the Avenger squats, revealing a powerful set of haunches at each corner. These exaggerated wheel arches are certainly over the top, but they do help mask the midsize Avengers narrower-than-normal body. The concept car wore 19-inch Bridgestone Potenzas, but even those arent large enough to fill the wells.

More jarring is the violent upswing of the Avengers beltline as it meets up with the C-pillar. We think its too disturbing to appear on a production car, but Chief Designer Ryan Nagodi makes no apologies. "In a sea of other sedans, we really wanted some cues where you get this strong gesture."

No such gestures come from under the concept cars hood, where theres an unassuming 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder. This will be the most popular engine option among the small number of Avengers the company manages to sell in Europe, but in the U.S., you can expect the same trio of gasoline engines found in the Sebring — a 2.4-liter inline-4, a 2.7-liter V6 and a 3.5-liter V6. Dodge is holding back all other performance details, but we do know the Avenger will offer a full set of side airbags, stability control and a hard drive-based navigation system with 20 GB of MP3 storage.

2007 Toyota Tundra Preview

Toyotas Tundra Turns into a Full-Size Truck for 2007

Toyota introduced its brand new 2007 Tundra truck at the Chicago Auto Show on February 9, 2006. This next generation Tundra is a full-size truck thats set up to tow 10,000+ pounds thanks to a new engine and heavy duty powertrain.

The 2007 Tundra will be available in three different body styles and three different trim levels. Flip through the gallery shots for a close up look at Toyotas newest truck.

Overview

Toyota spent the last seven years researching what truck buyers want in a truck, classifying six distinct groups of buyers and focusing on a particular segment of the market. The company refers to this group as True Truckers, who depend on their trucks every day and make up more than one quarter of all full-size truck buyers.

Toyota describes this group of truck loyalists as the true opinion leaders in the full-size truck market because they use, punish and demand the most out of the pickups they buy. Toyota believes the all-new Tundra will best satisfy the needs of this important buyer group, and will compete with any other truck on the market.

The 2007 Tundra will be offered in three cab configurations. The Tundra Double Cab 4x4 Limited was the only configuration shown at the Chicago show. The Double Cab will replace the current Access Cab in the lineup, and an even bigger four-door version will be shown at a later time, closer to vehicle launch.

Increased in every dimension, the 2007 Tundra has a longer wheelbase and an increase of 10 inches in overall length compared to the Access Cab it replaces. The new features include heavy-duty front brakes with four-piston calipers and larger discs, standard rear disc brakes, and a bigger, wider frame with 30 percent higher tensile strength steel.

The bold and powerful exterior styling carries over the "Power of the Fist" shape from the Toyota FTX concept. The body is thicker, the doors are taller and bold fender flares add to the aggressive stance.

Inside, Tundra surrounds the driver with a U-shaped cluster that keeps all controls easily within reach while also offering increased passenger room.

In addition to the new 5.7-liter V8, two other engines will be offered: a 4.0-liter V6 and a 4.7-liter i-Force V8. Tundra will be available in base, SR5 and Limited trim levels—buyers can choose from more than 30 different configurations with three engines, three cab styles, two-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive, three trim levels and three different bed sizes, including a full 8-foot bed.

In fact, the Japanese brands world premier Tundra is a Double Cab 4x4 Limited pickup designed to replace its current Access Cab, and is just one of over 30 different models available including an even larger four-door model debuting later this year. Combine the three engine choices, three trim levels, three bed sizes, three cab configurations and the choice of two- and four-wheel drive, and Toyota has a truck for just about everyone.

To further emphasize the Tundras functionality, drivers will find an array of practical features both inside and out. For example, adjustable headrests and extra large door handles allow those wearing bulky protective gear to easily move in and out of their truck without removing their hardhats or work gloves. A "U-shaped" cluster surrounds the driver with large control knobs and easy-to-read gauges keeping everything within reach while maintaining a clear view of the road ahead. The interior also features a glove compartment large enough to store a standard sized thermos and an easy access center console ready to hold a laptop computer or an assortment of file folders. Outside the truck, extra large side mirrors provide an expansive field of view while reducing wind noise and annoying image vibration. An optional widescreen backup camera is also available to assist in lining up a potential trailer or even just backing out of a stall at the grocery store. The camera is so small that Toyota has managed to hide it in the rear tailgate handle.

The tailgate itself is easier to operate than ever before. Heavy-duty dampers were installed in the hinges that let the tailgate down softly and smoothly. Just pull the handle and let go, the dampers will do the rest. This feature also reduces bouncing if the tailgate is left down while driving.

The new Tundra was fully designed and engineered in the U.S. It will be built in Princeton, Indiana, and San Antonio, Texas, making it an all-American truck, even if it does have a Japanese nameplate.

Pricing will not be released until the Tundra goes on sale, but Toyota says it will be competitively priced with its closest competitors.

Used Car Reviews 2001 Renault Sport Clio V6

Imagine a widebody Dodge Neon coupe. Mid-engined. Rear-wheel drive. No longer powered by a humble four-cylinder but by a V-6 borrowed from the 300M. Get the picture? Thats essentially the transformation Renaults Clio econo-hatch has undergone at the hands of Renault Sport and Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR). The result is the awesome Clio V6, son of the Renault 5 Turbo 2 and Renaults newest racer for the road.

Like its charismatic predecessor, the genetically manipulated Clio does not share many items with its mass-production siblings. Under the hood, where lesser Clios have their engine and transmission, the Clio V6 has a black plastic tray that serves as a bonsai cargo hold. The engine instead looms large behind the front seats. Although sealed off by a well-insulated clamshell capsule, the 24-valve V-6 is still every bit as audible as an angry mother-in-law riding shotgun. Mounted east-west, the 3.0-liter engine, which produces 230 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, is mated to an extremely long-legged six-speed manual transmission. With the exception of anti-lock brakes, there are no electronic watchdogs to aid traction or to sort out any handling imbalance. On grippy tarmac, the wild-looking Renault will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds. The top speed is an even more impressive 147 mph, although it takes a long time to get there. Fuel economy? About 16 mpg.

The Clio V6 comes together at TWRs facility in Uddevalla, Sweden, where serious structural reinforcements are required before an engine can be planted in the middle of the car. While they are at it, the Anglo-Scandinavian welding artists stretch the wheelbase and widen the track, front and rear. The suspension is also all new. Up front are damper struts and lower wishbones, with longitudinal and transverse links at the back, abetted by compact spring and damper units. Thick anti-roll bars and four large vented disc brakes complete the chassis setup. Although the doors and fenders are composite, the Clio V6 still tips the scales at a sumo-esque 2955 pounds.

Visually, the Clio V6 is an absolute treat. The designers created a much more sensuous and sculptured body with prominent lateral air intakes, a massive front spoiler, flared front and rear fenders, sills that are now almost too wide to step over, multi-lens headlamps with xenon bulbs, and a busy rear bumper that incorporates two rectangular breathing gills and a pair of enormous tailpipes. The alloy wheels are shod with well-filling Michelin Pilot Sport SX tires--205/50ZR-17 front and 235/45ZR-17 rear.

Inside, however, the mid-engined Clio is definitely more Renault than Sport. The plasticky dashboard is almost unchanged, and the build quality is more in line with a $15,000 runabout than with a $34,000 hot hatch. Strong points include the comfortable and generously adjustable seats, the conveniently tall shift lever, and the perfectly spaced drilled metal pedals.

Ready for a blast around the block? Then brace yourself for some serious initial understeer. Directional stability can be best described as sporadic, and at-the-limit handling is a take-your-heart-in-your-hands experience. Power oversteer is the essence of this cars character, but you need to plant your right foot quite early to unstick the rear tires, and, occasionally, it helps to point the nose toward the apex of a turn even before you can see it. What can really throw you on winding roads is the extra-wide turning circle and the steerings lack of lock, both of which must be blamed on serious front-end packaging constraints. On the credit side, the Clio V6 deserves full marks for a set of powerful disc brakes and for its intoxicating drivetrain, which is smooth, torquey, responsive, and unexpectedly refined.

Renault Sport and TWR will build no more than 5000 Clio V6s through September 2003. Since orders already exceed the limited supply, the cars are being allocated to preregistered customers via an Internet raffle.

Perhaps DaimlerChrysler should consider a similarly tricked-out Neon. After all, such a car works wonders for the corporate image--and for the adrenaline flow of its lucky owners.

Ford Bronco II Shining Through Despite Criticisms

Ford Bronco II Sold between the years 1984 to 1990, the Ford Bronco II was built and manufactured to be a compact sport utility vehicle. It was actually built to be a compact complement of the full sized Ford Bronco. It was also targeted so as to be the direct competitor to the Chevrolet S 10 Blazer and the Jeep Cherokee.

wheelbase that was very similar to the Volkswagen Beetle. The mechanical parts were very much similar to the Ford Ranger pickup’s mechanical components. The first models came out equipped with a 2.8 liter V6 engine which was very much similar to the 2.8 liter engine that was used in the Ford vehicles marketed and sold in Europe. Come the year 1986, the Ford Bronco II came introduced with a 2.9 liter EFI V6. It has been said that this engine was doomed from the beginning with design flaws. This engine often suffered from premature cylinder head failure and loss of valve train lubrication as well. This happened when the valve train lubrication was not rigorously maintained. However, Ford was able to see this flaw immediately and it acted upon changing or correcting this flaw in the soonest time possible. Come 1989, this mistake was already corrected. However, the Ford Bronco II had already accumulated unattractive comments and a not so good reputation to potential buyers. These buyers were concerned about the safety of this vehicle.

This vehicle has also been reputed to tip over during some situations because of the high center of gravity. Later on in 1991, the Ford Bronco II platform underwent a major redesign and was released to be wider and longer. However, despite the bad kind of reputation that this vehicle received, the Ford Bronco II still continued to be actively sought by customers and patrons who are looking for a cheap, solid and compact sports utility vehicle. Of course, these buyers would have to do some work on it but the replacement parts and engine could be found easily for the Ford Bronco II could have an engine swap with the Ford Ranger.

2006 Mercedes Benz SLK Class Review

Pros: SLR look, nice grunt fron the 6 cylinder, refined interior, good value

Cons: If you dont get the GPS, the console looks empty

Fast and yet smooth to drive, the most comfortable and roomy 2 seater ever made. A total Beauty! I test drove almost every sport car before. But when I saw this car at the dealer I fell in love inmediately and it just took 3 seconds to decide that the SLK is what I wanted. I trade in my AUDI TT

Walkaround

The Mercedes-Benz SLK was thoroughly redesigned for 2005 and the objectives were obvious. Where the first-generation SLK was cute, almost dainty, the current one has a more aggressive appearance.

The SLK imitates the Mercedes McLaren SLR road car, which is hand-built in conjunction with the McLaren Formula 1 team and sells for $700,000. The resemblance is even more pronounced on SLKs with the AMG sport package, with its more aggressive air dams and side sills. The wedge-shaped SLK sports a long, sloping hood and a short rear deck with wide doors in between. If the 2006 model is more macho than the first-generation SLK, its also more cluttered, and a tad schizophrenic, as if two different designers did the front and back. Its face is busy, so theres almost too much to look at, while the back end is clean and sleek.

The design overhaul was not entirely cosmetic, however. The SLK introduced a new generation of high-tech Mercedes paint, which was developed to be more scratch-resistant than conventional paint. The 2006 is larger than the first-generation SLK and the larger dimensions allow for a roomier cabin, albeit still cozy. Trunk capacity increased to 6.6 cubic feet.
The SLK features a retractable roof that folds in 22 seconds. The original design of this roof dazzled crowds when it was first shown at the 1994 Turin auto show, and the current top still draws spectators when operated.

Driving Impressions

Most small, luxury two-seat sports cars present buyers with a choice: They can choose a folding soft top like the Porsche Boxster or BMW Z4, or a fixed metal roof like the Audi TT coupe.
The Mercedes-Benz SLK offers the best of both worlds. Open motoring is the touch of a button away. Yet when the SLKs retractable metal roof is up and closed, this two-seater is bit quieter than its soft-top counterparts and a bit snugger against the elements. The SLKs solid roof also reduces the windshield flex and shimmy present in even the best-built convertibles. This is the tightest, most rattle-free SLK yet.

The new SLK280 generates an impressive 228 horsepower, more than the upgrade engine in the previous generation. Our test car, an SLK350, delivers 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, more than any of its primary competitors.

Combined with the six-speed manual transmission, the SLK350s engine moves this car from pretty around-town cruiser to true sports car. Indeed, with 0-60 mph times in the mid five-second range, the SLK350 is one of the quickest cars in its class. It packs plenty of punch when taking off from a stoplight or accelerating onto the highway. Better still, the new V6s deliver plenty of acceleration-producing torque at any engine speed: down low near idle, cruising at highway speed, or up near the redline. The SLK350 engine is impressively flexible. A jab at the gas pedal enables quick, safe passing maneuvers.

The SLKs rigid body structure reduces shakes and rattles and improves handling. The rack-and-pinion steering is precise, and well suited for point-and-shoot blasts through tight hairpins turns. Unlike the previous generation SLK, the current models seem to relish spirited driving, and do so with no degradation in ride quality. In fact, because it shimmies and vibrates less, the current SLK is much more pleasant than its predecessors for profiling at a leisurely pace.
The ultimate SLK, of course, is the V8-powered SLK55 AMG. This hot rod is intended to sell in the hundreds, and its priced accordingly. Its the SLK for those who must have the most horsepower, grip and stopping power. Take the SLK350 at its most exhilarating, multiply times two, and you get a hint of the AMG. We wish this model were offered with a manual transmission. Still, its beefed-up seven-speed automatic, with full manual shift control via buttons on the steering wheel spokes, can make for a truly engaging driving experience.

2006 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Summary

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a 2-door, 2-passenger convertible sports car, available in 3 trims, ranging from the SLK280 Roadster to the SLK55 AMG Roadster.

The SLK55 AMG Roadster is equipped with a standard 5.5-liter, V8, 355-horsepower engine that achieves 16-mpg in the city and 22-mpg on the highway. 2006 Honda Civic GX NGV 5 Spd AT Limited Availability

Pros: Good fuel economy,

Cons: New Design causes blind spot in front on drivers side due to left window panel being to thick

This is a great car to drive, and learn how to drive in. This car had great reaction, and is very easy to manuever even in high speeds, it is less expensive then the accord and yet still had a better ride.

----------------

Honda became famous in America with its Accord, but the Honda Civic has slowly passed the Accord in popularity (at least with internet searches). A younger generation is buying the 2006 Honda Civic in droves. The new Honda Civic comes in 5 models with the Coupe, GX NGV,

Hybrid Sedan, Sedan, and SI Coupe. The Honda Civic Coupe is the cheapest at $14560 and the Honda Civic GX NGV is $24,440. The coupe is the 2 door model and the sedans offer 4 doors. We still prefer the Honda Civic Sedan at $14760 with 4 doors and a large enough interior to fit 4 people (even with 2 carseats in the back) comfortably. Although the Accord is better for safety with a slightly larger body and interior area, the Civic is a better value for the money.

NEW FOR 2006

The 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid is a 4-door, 5-passenger family sedan, available in two trims, the CVT AT-PZEV and the CVT AT-PZEV w/ Navigation System. Upon introduction, both trims are equipped with a standard 1.3-liter, I4, 110-horsepower, hybrid engine that achieves 49-mpg in the city and 51-mpg on the highway. A variable speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid is redesigned for 2006.

The following are the technical specifications for this style of 2006 Honda Civic GX NGV

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) 1.8-Liter i-VTEC(TM), I4, 16-Valve, SOHC, MPFI Engine; Front Mounted With Horsepower Of 113@ 6300 and Torque Of 109@ 4300, Alloy Block and Alloy Cylinder Heads

C4 Picasso SX Preview

The new C4 is an evolution in all aspects. If you are thinking of buying a C4, in my opinion, the VTR+ is a better option than lower models, as it has all the "bells and whistles" that the C4 is known for.

Set to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show later this month, the C4 Picasso features an angle of vision that spans 70 degrees, which is double the industry standard for Multi-Purpose Vehicles.

With 240Nm of torque, its more responsive than its unleaded stablemate, and doesnt have to be revved hard to give peppy performance. Its frugal, too, returning 50mpg on the combined cycle. It works quite well with Citroens new six-speed semi-autogearbox, which provides smooth shifts (with practice) in manual mode through steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The full automatic transmission is still a bit jerky, though. And, costing an estimated £200 extra over the conventional manual version, it wont be to all drivers tastes. However, it frees up the centre console, making room for a handy fridge to be fitted.

Indeed, all C4 Picassos offer other similarly neat ideas, such as lights under the door mirrors to improve access in the dark. Theres lots of space inside, while each seat in the middle row flips and slides forward, giving good access to the rearmost chairs. Pull a few cords and all the seats fold flat into the floor, creating 1,951 litres of luggage space.

Build quality is reassuringly solid and although equipment levels are not yet finalised, the SX is expected to have cruise control, alloy wheels, an automatic parking brake, hill-start assist and a split tailgate as standard.

The C4 Picasso isnt sporty, but its very comfortable. The suspension (aided by optional pneumatic rear dampers on our test car) soaks up bumps with ease, and it all adds up to a brilliantly capable people carrier.

It will mark the latest in a series of new model launches for the manufacturer, which has also included a 1.6i 16V SX Auto and a 1.6 HDi VTR 110 hp diesel version of the C3 supermini.

2000 Isuzu Hombre Review

Introduction

The first Isuzu offered for sale in the U.S. was the LUV pickup truck, sold by Chevrolet dealers from 1972 to 1981. Now the tables have turned: Isuzus compact pickup is a version of the Chevrolet S10, and is built in the same Shreveport, Louisiana, factory.

The most important difference between the two is in equipment—while the GM product boasts an extensive array of optional equipment, the Hombre is offered in a small model range with a modest selection of equipment packages. In fact, when the Hombre was introduced in 1996 it was a very basic compact truck. The Spacecab extended cab, V6 power and 4WD have all been added over the last three years.

2000 Isuzu Hombre

Stronger V6 engines went under Hombre hoods. The V6 gained 5 horsepower in 2WD models, and 10 in 4WD Hombres. Four-cylinder models now were available with dual-fuel capability. Spacecab Hombres became available in a greater number of variations, including a V6 with base S trim. Previously optional on 2WD regular-cab S models, the Performance Package heavy-duty suspension became standard across the board. Also, 4x4 models got slightly taller tires this year.

Isuzus entry in the compact-pickup market, the Hombre, is built using sheetmetal stamped by General Motors with basic mechanical and structural components donated from the Chevrolet S-10/GMC Sonoma twins. When it debuted in 1996, the Hombre came with two-wheel drive, a regular cab and a weak, 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine -- not exactly the tough stuff truck buyers craved.

Built in the United States, Hombres are currently available in a variety of cab and powertrain configurations, ranging from a standard-cab, 2WD model with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine to a 4WD, 4.3-liter V6 Space Cab model featuring an optional third door.

Isuzu introduced the Space Cab extended-cab model, a 4.3-liter V6 engine and a four-speed automatic transmission in 1997, adding four-wheel drive in 1998. Last year, Hombres received a new bumper design and a third-door option. For 2000, Isuzu ups the ante, making the heavy-duty suspension standard, bumping the 4WD V6 models horsepower by 10 (2WD models get five) and the 2.2-liter four cylinder becomes a dual-fuel engine, burning E85 alcohol and gasoline.

The regular-cab versions are available in S and XS trim levels, and options are few. S models are the workhorses, with vinyl floor covering and limited options that include air conditioning, stereo and rear step bumper. Hombre XS models are better equipped, offering custom cloth upholstery, carpeted floors and a tachometer.

Overall Review

The ride is very comfortable, steering is precise, brakes are excellent but the 4 cylinder engine could have just a touch more power. The ride height is perfect. Entering and exiting the truck is very easy. The third door makes using the extra space easier. Overall, Id say an excellent bargain for the price.

Extended-cab models are now offered in S and XS trim, providing vinyl folding jump seats in the rear and easy-entry seats in the front. If ordered with the optional third door, the truck comes equipped with only one jump seat. Four-wheel antilock brakes, battery-rundown protection, auto on/off headlamps and a theft-deterrent system are standard on all models. As before, 4WD Hombre buyers will enjoy standard alloy wheels and will benefit from a midyear tire upgrade to an aggressive 235/75R15 size.

Favorite Features

What can i say besides it being an Isuzu. Fun to drive! Great aircondition. I also like that i can put things in the back. Interior Nice.

Design:
Body colors have been specially designed to enhance the harmony and purity of the car. For painting the car was used an innovative approach where the first layer deposited basic pigments, then the second metallic particles for brilliant shine. Another layer is then for a fuller effect. The color red 8C Competizione is the last transparent layer applied to a depth of delivery.
